I just took the SAT today and I feel that this book changed nothing. Although it has an O.K. grammar section, I've seen better. The analogy and critical reading section were [garbage]. It had nearly no vocbulary building strategies. Plus, the book was outdated.(1986 - please!)This book also knew next to nothing about the tests.(and what it did was outdated) I bought it because it was cheap and covered both the SAT and ACT, so I thought it might be good. Was I in for a big shock! Don't be enticed by the low price, you can find better, newer, updated books on the market.

This book is good for some extra questions, but it by no means contains the hardest questions. Like numerous other reviewers of GMAT books have mentioned, the best prep is to use the official GMAT book. For the toughest questions, I would recommend doing the two tests you can download for free from mba.com when you sign up. Do those tests multiple times because while some questions remain the same, the majority change.

If you get better, you'll get to the harder questions. The questions in the Kaplan GMAT 800 are of moderate difficulty. They may be somewhat hard from a straight math point of view, but the questions on the actual GMAT are slightly different and trickier in nature. As far as the strategies go, there were a couple useful ones, although they may seem obvious to some. So, to summarize, this book is a decent supplement, but don't think you'll be getting an outstanding score just because you can answer the questions in this book.

The GMAT prep books can be overwhelming, especially for those of us who have been out of college more than 5 years! I tried starting w/ the OG and my moral was crushed! This "dummies" book, like all "dummies" books is very straightforward and simply written.

Which is a good thing! If you have the luxury of having at least 2 months to study and therefore have the time to work through this book, invest in it! it is a good book to start with to not only explain the test, but to also give you some basic practice questions, some tips on strategy and some decent solution explanations.

Good confidence builder prior to moving onto the OG, Kaplan, Barrons, EZ Solutions. From this book(again assuming you have at least 2 months to study) I would move onto Crackin the Gmat, then onto Kaplan and Official Guide(OG), for extra practice throw in Barrons and for subject specific help, look into EZ Solutions and PowerScore...=)

The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 10th Edition

There's something to be said for the comfort of working with the "official" book. The review sections are dry and offer nothing in the way of helpful strategy, but the skills you need are there (for tips and tricks, Princeton Review might be the best). My assessment of this resource is that the questions tend to all be in the middle range of difficulty.

After a lot of studying, these questions all seemed average and I wanted something more challenging so that I would be ready to do battle with the real test.

For that I turned to the Kaplan 800 guide. I felt I had to stray outside this book after awhile because it was dulling my sense of difficulty. It's a good idea to do as much of this as you can - but I recommend paying attention to how you're doing and eventually leaving this book behind for deeper waters when you start to get bored.

My recommendation: start with Princeton Review (fun and easy with good tips, but not hardcore enough). Then do any specialized "workout" books you need (I got math workout books from Princeton Review and GMAC).

Get this book and get into the dry math review and practice questions. Buy the Barron's book if you really have nothing better to do than waste your time and money (this wasn't totally useless, but mostly so).

Then go nuts with Kaplan and scare yourself to death with their overly difficult practice tests - you'll score lower on those by 200 points than on the real thing, if you're like me. Then take the test - the light on the other side of the exam awaits you!
