American Racist: The Life and Films of Thomas Dixon

By Anthony Slide
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
Pages: 264
Date: 2004-09-10
ISBN-10: 0813123283

Description:
Thomas Dixon has a notorious reputation as the writer of the source material for D.W. Griffith’s groundbreaking and controversial 1915 feature film The Birth of a Nation. Perhaps unfairly, Dixon has been branded an arch-conservative and a racist obsessed with what he viewed as "the Negro problem." As American Racist makes clear, however, Dixon was a complex, multitalented individual who, as well as writing some of the most popular novels of the early twentieth century, was involved in the production of some eighteen films.

Dixon used the motion picture as a propaganda tool for his often outrageous opinions on race, communism, socialism, and feminism. His most spectacular production, The Fall of a Nation (1916), argues for American preparedness in the face of war and boasts a musical score by Victor Herbert, making it the first American feature film to have an original score by a major composer.

Like the majority of Dixon’s films, The Fall of a Nation has been lost, but had it survived, it might well have taken its place alongside The Birth of a Nation as a masterwork of silent film. Anthony Slide examines each of Dixon’s films and discusses the novels from which they were adapted. Slide chronicles Dixon’s transformation from a major supporter of the original Ku Klux Klan in his early novels to an ardent critic of the modern Klan in his last film, Nation Aflame. American Racist is the first book to discuss Dixon’s work outside of literature and provide a wide overview of the life and career of this highly controversial twentieth-century southern populist.

I just took the SAT today and I feel that this book changed nothing. Although it has an O.K. grammar section, I've seen better. The analogy and critical reading section were [garbage]. It had nearly no vocbulary building strategies. Plus, the book was outdated.(1986 - please!)This book also knew next to nothing about the tests.(and what it did was outdated) I bought it because it was cheap and covered both the SAT and ACT, so I thought it might be good. Was I in for a big shock! Don't be enticed by the low price, you can find better, newer, updated books on the market.

I see this book has some bad reviews and why....I don't know so am going to read so after I write my review because this book to me is pure gold and I wish I could have the guy who wrote it sign mines! Anyway let me give you some backround information on me. My life has not been so grand at all had some things happen to me at a young age that set me back badly and it was never my fault...what could a four year old do? So that thing that happen to me made me grow up into a mute person if someone waved at me I wouldn't if someone wanted talk to me I panic my social skills were messed up.

So you can guess when I went to school teachers saw me as the stupid slow one because hey I wouldn't talk really at all maybe can I use the bathroom? Even in middle school the teachers thought I skipped school and guess what? I was siting right next to her the whole time yea it was funny for them thats how quite I was so during my first years in school I was the slow kid and teachers didn't even bother in helpping me whats the point right? My mind was nothing I mean a animal was smarter then me so sometimes this lady would come in and give me all the answers in class and I had to do nothing at all not one thing but the other students were like thats not fair but I kinda enjoyed it no work and no one ever cared.

So one day in forth grade...or was it third grade anyway we had a spelling test and guess what? I study the 10 words for a week and I learned them so well that I even knew the order of them so I guess I wasn't stupid and I cry sometimes even though it was long ago but as the teacher was calling out words I got bored and filled the whole row of words on the sheet and she came over and said sorry you failed and I was young and didn't understand at all but she accused me of cheating and she had no proof because I didn't they saw me as a stupid child so for me to write out ten words and in order was cheating so she gave me a F....for studying.

An Old English Grammar

By Randolph Quirk
Publisher: Routledge
Pages: 176 |Publication Date: 1958-01-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415045347
pdf file [scanned] (6.8 MB - zipped: 6.7 MB); no password

As the preface to this edition indicates, this Grammar is designed for the literary student of English as opposed to the student of philology. Thus, the emphasis is on practical issues of the language.

In other words, it eschews lengthy and digressive forays into the history or context of certain linguistic developments (though it does touch on certain essential matters) and focuses instead on the issues most pertinent to one who wishes to begin mastering the basics and intermediate elements of the language, such as inflexions, cases, syntactical issues.
One does not need to bring a broad basis of linguuistic training/experience to bear; but one should keep in mind that it is presented like a traditional lexicon one might encounter in Latin or Greek, i.e., no handholding through the practical elements of the language - nor is it riddled with practice sentences or parallel examples in ModE. For those, however, who want to undertake a rigorous and systematic study of the basics of OE, this is a very handy and practical Grammar reference with which to begin such an endeavor.

Alpha Teach Yourself Grammar and Style in 24 Hours

By Pamela Rice Hahn, Ph.D. Dennis E. Hensley
Publisher: Alpha
Pages: 448 Publication Date: 2000-05-19
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0028638999
922 KB rar pdf

I haven't studied grammer since grade school and this book is a good refresher. The content seems comprehensive. However, I am a little annoyed at two incidentals:
1. There are just not enough examples.
2. I have located four errors in the quizzes and I'm only a third of the way through the book. This is the most frustrating aspect. To what extent can I improve my grammer when the answers for the quizzes are incorrect? For those that own the text, look at problem 6 on page 127. The correct answer should be B and not A as the answer sheet describes.
I think I will hang onto this book and use it as a reference.

This book isn't easy. I have my masters in English, working on a PhD, and at times I was even caught up with it. Very good quizes, but too fast pace, it is impossible to learn everything with the limited resources given. But, for a professor with a PhD, maybe it's possible... But then again, he should already know it all.

The GRE Test For Dummies (For Dummies (Career/Education))

By Suzee Vlk, Michelle Rose Gilman, Veronica Saydak
Publisher: For Dummies
Pages: 360 |Publication Date: 2009-03-09
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0470009195
Rar'd PDF ~ 4.3 MB's Bookmarked

Description: A totally effective and surprisingly fun guide to the Graduate Record Examination
In Fall 2007, the GRE Program is planning to implement significant changes to the verbal measure, quantitative measure, and analytical writing sections of the GRE.

This easy-to-use, refreshingly irreverent revision shares inside information on what to expect with these changes, helping both recent graduates and workforce veterans prepare for the revised test, maximize their score, and get into the graduate program of their choice.
It includes all of the secrets of the Internet-based test (iBT)-in which the computer generates unique questions according to correct or incorrect answers-as well as brush-up reviews on math and grammar, two complete practice tests, and proven time-management techniques that make test-prep fun and simple.

Suzee Vlk wrote For Dummies guides to the ACT, SAT, GRE, and GMAT and taught test preparation classes for more than 25 years. Michelle Gilman (Solana, CA) is the founder and CEO of Fusion Learning Center. Veronica Saydak (Solana, CA) is Director of student curricula at Fusion and has been tutoring test preparation at all levels for several years.

This book did a great job of helping to make GRE preparation seem reasonable. I went from knowing nothing about the GRE to 2-weeks later scoring a 1230 (670 math; 560 verbal). The only specific GRE preparation I had was this book. I highly recommend it. If you're someone who is looking for a 1400+ score, the only additional preparation I would recommend is the Barron's word list, which I didn't feel like taking the time to study.

Colloquial Urdu: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series)

By Tej K. Bhatia
Publisher: Routledge
Pages: 368 Publication Date: 2000-08-08

Format / Quality: Mp3(ripped from cassetes) + Book(PDF) zipped
Size: Book(11,7MB+11,2MB+11,4MB) / Audio 82MB

This book is really a knock-off of the author's 'Colloquial Hindi'. Of course the two languages do share a vast vocabulary and grammar in common, but what it really means here is that if you already have one of these books (the Hindi would be the better one to get) you really don't need the other.

The dialogues, grammar and exercises are all in a phonetic transcription and only the dialogues (in the back of the book) are given in the nastaliq script. The printing of this beautiful and ornately detailed script is so tiny that it is literally necessary to use a magnifying lens to read it.

Description: Colloquial Urdu is a practical course in everyday written and spoken Urdu requiring no prior knowledge of the language. This book is ideal for study independently or with a teacher. Cassettes recorded by native Urdu speakers are also available.
This paperback in the Colloquial Language Learning Series is available individually here or as part of a cassette pack. To purchase the book and the cassettes, please refer to the cassette pack listing for this language.

PDF For Reorienting Economics

By Tony Lawson
Publisher: Routledge
Pages: 383 Publication Date: 2003-06
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415253365
File PDF, size 10 Mb

I must say that I was quite surprised to read Herbert Gintis's negative review of Tony Lawson's recent book Reorienting Economics (2003) on this website. Especially puzzling is Gintis's impression that the book is simply a rewrite of Lawson's earlier book Economics and Reality (1997) with no new material added.

I simply cannot explain how Gintis could have missed so much I found in the book that is new. The only possible explanation is that he must have an edition different from my own; perhaps the one he bought in the US does not have the same content as the one I bought in the UK when the book first came out.

So let me tell the readers of this Amazon reaction line about all of the new material that was in my version of Lawson's book. Let's see: The new book extends Lawson's original ontological analysis (distinguishing among different forms of closed systems, as well as including a transcendental deduction of his conception of social reality) and an account of contrast explanation (tying it in with dialectical reasoning).

The book covers such new ground as the role of metaphor in social theorizing, the nature and utility of evolutionary economics, the possibility of borrowing from Biology, the relevance to social theorizing of mimetics, the nature of economics itself, and whether it can qualify as a separate social science. It also provides a lucid account of the current heterodox traditions, careful to identify what constitutes them as heterodox and also what distinguishes them from each other. In that regard, I think that Lawson makes a reasonable attempt at resolving what has been perceived by some as incoherence within Post Keynesianism.

Moreover, he indicates ways in which tensions within Feminist projects of epistemology and emancipation might be overcome. The latter analysis includes a novel interpretation and defense of feminist "standpoint theorizing" as well as a contribution assessing the nature of what he calls "sustainable emancipatory projects." Further, in addressing the project of (old) Institutionalism, Lawson makes, in my opinion, a major contribution to the interpretation of Thorstein Veblen. There were things there that I just had never realized before in my reading of Veblen. And further still, the book contains what I consider to be a very significant contribution to the history of formalistic economics (presented in the form of an illustration of Lawson's extremely important and novel model of evolutionary change elaborated in an earlier chapter). As far as I can tell, the coverage and exposition of these issues are entirely new to Reorienting Economics.

Growing flows of knowledge, people and financing cross national borders and feed both worldwide collaboration and competition. These effects of globalisation increasingly impact higher education.

Through both quantitative and qualitative analysis, this book provides a comprehensive and structured look at these essential questions.

It explores the topic of cross-border higher education in terms of student, faculty and institutional mobility, providing a specific focus on academic research. Other issues addressed include higher education provision, financing, governance and quality assurance, with an emphasis on the use of market-like mechanisms.

The book covers most OECD countries as well as many non-OECD countries and offers the reader specific reflections on China, India and European co-operation.

Linear Model Methodology

Author : André I. Khuri
562 pages Publisher: Chapman & Hall/CRC; 1 edition (October 21, 2009)
Language: English ISBN-10: 1584884819
Type: PDF | Size: 3.53 MB

Given the importance of linear models in statistical theory and experimental research, a good understanding of their fundamental principles and theory is essential.

Supported by a large number of examples, Linear Model Methodology provides a strong foundation in the theory of linear models and explores the latest developments in data analysis.

After presenting the historical evolution of certain methods and techniques used in linear models, the book reviews vector spaces and linear transformations and discusses the basic concepts and results of matrix algebra that are relevant to the study of linear models.

Although mainly focused on classical linear models, the next several chapters also explore recent techniques for solving well-known problems that pertain to the distribution and independence of quadratic forms, the analysis of estimable linear functions and contrasts, and the general treatment of balanced random and mixed-effects models.

The author then covers more contemporary topics in linear models, including the adequacy of Satterthwaite’s approximation, unbalanced fixed- and mixed-effects models, heteroscedastic linear models, response surface models with random effects, and linear multiresponse models. The final chapter introduces generalized linear models, which represent an extension of classical linear models.

Linear models provide the groundwork for analysis of variance, regression analysis, response surface methodology, variance components analysis, and more, making it necessary to understand the theory behind linear modeling.

Reflecting advances made in the last thirty years, this book offers a rigorous development of the theory underlying linear models.

TOEFL Listening Practice | AUDIOBOOK

Audio CD
Publisher: Kaplan Publishing; Version edition (December 7, 2004)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0743264371
Rar'd MP3 files - 95 M.B.

This audio CD is an excellent tool for any and everyone getting ready for and aiming at the TOEFL test. It provides both trainers and students working on their own with a wide and extensive range of listening material typically found in the listening section of the TOEFL test.

Some of those preparing for international exams such as the TOEFL need extra practice for the listening section and it is not that easy to find supplementary material focusing on that specific aspect.

As an experienced trainer in the corporate and academic (international exams) world, I strongly recommend this as very good supplementary material, for TOEFL preparation or even for those interested in improving their listening skills in American English.

However, I should say that the reason why I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because it does not come with any scripts or accompanying exercises, which would definitely optimize the recorded material and its results. Therefore, trainers should develop their own activities in order to maximise results.

Kaplan Gmat Advanced : Kaplan GMAT 800, 2008-2009 Edition

408 pages |Publisher: Kaplan Publishing (March 4, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1419551795
12MB | PDF.. Rar

This book is good for some extra questions, but it by no means contains the hardest questions. Like numerous other reviewers of GMAT books have mentioned, the best prep is to use the official GMAT book. For the toughest questions, I would recommend doing the two tests you can download for free from mba.com when you sign up. Do those tests multiple times because while some questions remain the same, the majority change.

If you get better, you'll get to the harder questions. The questions in the Kaplan GMAT 800 are of moderate difficulty. They may be somewhat hard from a straight math point of view, but the questions on the actual GMAT are slightly different and trickier in nature. As far as the strategies go, there were a couple useful ones, although they may seem obvious to some. So, to summarize, this book is a decent supplement, but don't think you'll be getting an outstanding score just because you can answer the questions in this book.

The PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible: A Comprehensive System for Attacking the GMAT Critical Reasoning Questions

To improve your score across the board in the verbal section, you need to first improve your critical reasoning skills. It not improved my critical reasoning section score but also had a direct impact on my comprehensive reading section score.

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to improve the verbal score to beyond the 90th percentile.

The Digital Photographer's Guide For Photoshop CS4 Workflow

By: Tim Grey
400 pages |Publisher: Sybex (November 17, 2008)
ISBN-10: 0470381280
25576 KB rared pdf, no pass

Photoshop CS4 Workflow: The Digital Photographer's Guide is one of the best Photoshop primers I've read. The author works through image adjustments in a very logical progression. He begins with very simple edits and works his way up to more complex fine-tuning. The instructions are both step-by-step and very clear.

He also does an excellent job of explaining the "big picture" of why you want to make these adjustments and does not just turn you into a mouse clicker following steps by rote.
While no one book is going to tell you everything you could ever want to know about Photoshop, this is a fairly comprehensive tome. The entire workflow process is covered beginning with downloading files and sorting them in Bridge, all the way through printing. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" function to check the Table of Contents if you're interested in a complete list of the specific steps covered. The good news is that all the most common bases are covered, and covered well. If I could add one thing to this book, it would be a chapter or two on the basics of making adjustments in the LAB color space

Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks For Photoshop CS4

I bought Lynette's Photoshop CS3 book, and recommended it to the Community College classes I teach. This book is equally as concise, visual, and focused on the important things anyone would want to do in PhotsShop. Now that my campus is upgrading, I will be recommending this title as well!

Any book like this is great if it has one good tip and this book has several. But some tips are not CS4 tips but require nick software, which is expensive. I think the tips on sharpening and noise reduction should use the tools available in CS4.

Total Training For Photoshop CS4 Extended Essentials [Video Training] (DVD-Rom)

by: Presenter: Geoff Blake
Shipping Weight: 3.5 ounces
Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S.
ASIN: B001IEETYU
Item model number: TPS CS4
Running Time: 6 Hrs, 1 DVD | 850MB

As someone who knows a little about Photoshop I still managed to learn a few little neat tricks. Geoff goes in depth about the majority of the tools in photoshop and all the different ways to access them. One cool trick I can mention is holding Ctrl and SpaceBar and then clicking and dragging a square to zoom to that square(you can also just single click on the canvas). Previously i would press Ctrl + a few times to zoom and then pan to the location.

Little things like that are through out the whole DVD. Following along with the project files make learning Photoshop so much easier than reading a book. If you have two monitors watch the DVD on one and then follow along in Photoshop on the other.

The structure of the DVD is great and you can even skip lessons and go to only what you need to know with an easily accessible menu. As an intermediate user of Photoshop i found some lessons a little boring and some things get repeated a few times. I can't wait to get my hands on the "Advanced" DVD. If you're new to Photoshop i highly recommend giving this a go. You will not regret it.

I wish i knew about the Total Training DVD's years ago when i was learning Photoshop.

This DVD is suited for MAC and WINDOWS users. Geoff alternates between a WINDOWS and MAC machine every lesson. Whenever he presses ctrl he makes sure to mention for MAC users to press command and vice versa. The reason i gave 4 stars is because i wanted a little more for what i paid. I didn't want the lessons to end.

GMAT For Dummies

By Scott, J.D. Hatch, Lisa, M.A. Hatch
Publisher: For Dummies
Pages: 384 |Date: 2006-09-12
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0764596535
ZIPed PDF ebook, high quality, with bookmarks

The GMAT prep books can be overwhelming, especially for those of us who have been out of college more than 5 years! I tried starting w/ the OG and my moral was crushed! This "dummies" book, like all "dummies" books is very straightforward and simply written.

Which is a good thing! If you have the luxury of having at least 2 months to study and therefore have the time to work through this book, invest in it! it is a good book to start with to not only explain the test, but to also give you some basic practice questions, some tips on strategy and some decent solution explanations.

Good confidence builder prior to moving onto the OG, Kaplan, Barrons, EZ Solutions. From this book(again assuming you have at least 2 months to study) I would move onto Crackin the Gmat, then onto Kaplan and Official Guide(OG), for extra practice throw in Barrons and for subject specific help, look into EZ Solutions and PowerScore...=)

Passages Student's book 2: An Upper-level Multi-skills Course For Student

by: Jack C. Richards, Chuck Sandy
Paperback: 130 pages
Publisher: Cambridge University Press (March 28, 2000)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0521564719
File : 22 Mb rar'd

I have been using Passages in an English As A Second Language class in Guatemala for about four months and have found it to be a valuable and interesting resource. My students are all native Spanish speakers and I have seen their interest in the material and an improvement in their skills.

The series is made up of a student's book, workbook and a teacher's book. All three of these books are well integrated and the teacher's book is written so well that any reasonably educated native English speaker can utilize it to instruct non-native speakers. The grammar points are well selected and relate to the material used to introduce and practice them. I even find the subject matter personally interesting and find that it stimulates conversation in the classroom.

The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Linguistics

By Dirk Geeraerts, Hubert Cuyckens
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Pages: 1364 | Publication Date: 2007-10-17
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0195143787
WinRAR : 6.77 MB

Book Description:
In the past decade, Cognitive Linguistics has developed into one of the most dynamic and attractive frameworks within theoretical and descriptive linguistics The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Linguistics is a major new reference that presents a comprehensive overview of the main theoretical concepts and descriptive/theoretical models of Cognitive Linguistics, and covers its various subfields, theoretical as well as applied. The first twenty chapters give readers the opportunity to acquire a thorough knowledge of the fundamental analytic concepts and descriptive models of Cognitive Linguistics and their background.

The book starts with a set of chapters discussing different conceptual phenomena that are recognized as key concepts in Cognitive Linguistics: prototypicality, metaphor, metonymy, embodiment, perspectivization, mental spaces, etc.

A second set of chapters deals with Cognitive Grammar, Construction Grammar, and Word Grammar, which, each in their own way, bring together the basic concepts into a particular theory of grammar and a specific model for the description of grammatical phenomena.

Special attention is given to the interrelation between Cognitive and Construction Grammar. A third set of chapters compares Cognitive Linguistics with other forms of linguistic research (functional linguistics, autonomous linguistics, and the history of linguistics), thus giving a readers a better grip on the position of Cognitive Linguistics within the landscape of linguistics at large.

The remaining chapters apply these basic notions to various more specific linguistic domains, illustrating how Cognitive Linguistics deals with the traditional linguistic subdomains (phonology, morphology, lexicon, syntax, text and discourse), and demonstrating how it handles linguistic variation and change.

Finally they consider its importance in the domain of Applied Linguistics, and look at interdisciplinary links with research fields such as philosophy and psychology. With a well-known cast of contributors from around the world, this reference work will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in (cognitive) linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, and anthropology.
