Adjunct Adverbials in English | Studies in English Language

By Hilde Hasselgård
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Pages: 338, Date: 2010-03-31
ISBN-10 : 0521515564, PDF 2.2 Mb

In this original study, Hilde Hasselgård discusses the use of adverbials in English, through examining examples found in everyday texts. Adverbials - clause elements that typically refer to circumstances of time, space, reason and manner - cover a range of meanings and can be placed at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a sentence.

The description of the frequency of meaning types and discussion of the reasons for selecting positions show that the use of adverbials differs across text types. Adverbial usage is often linked to the general build-up of a text and part of its content and purpose. In using real texts, Hasselgård identifies a challenge for the classification of adjuncts, and also highlights that some adjuncts have uses that extend into the textual and interpersonal domains, obscuring the traditional divisions between adjuncts, disjuncts and conjuncts.

Reading for Thinking , Sixth Edition

By: Laraine E. Flemming
Publisher: Wadsworth Publishing
Date: 2008, 4.4 Mb

Incorporating a wealth of practice exercises and high-interest readings, Reading for Thinking focuses on improving reading skills at the "micro- level" and moving on to the "macro-level." Over half of the book is devoted to evaluating, drawing inferences, and identifying tone, bias, and purpose. The Sixth Edition continues to focus on developing students' comprehension and critical-thinking skills.

Flemming uses a carefully designed sequence of explanations and exercises that allows students to approach critical reading as a natural extension of essential comprehension skills, rather than a discrete set of new strategies.

Armed with the ability to both analyze and evaluate a writer's work, students apply those twin intellectual tools to Flemming's trademark high-interest readings to determine purpose, analyze evidence, detect bias, recognize tone, and compare opposing points of view.

PDF For English Language Learners (Issues That Concern You)

By: Tamara Roleff,
publisher: Greenhaven
Date: 2009, pages: 145, PDF 5.5 mb

Mexican immigrants make up the largest group of immigrants in the United States and are often the focus of debates about English language learners and bilingual education.
It is this inability to speak English—or at the very least, their poor understanding of written and spoken English—

that fuels the debate over what steps private businesses and the government should take so that English language learners can communicate with English and non-English speakers.

The controversy starts in the schools with the question of whether students should be taught in bilingual or English immersion classrooms.

Opponents of bilingual education assert that immersion is the best way to learn, both school subjects and the English language. Immersion is just that—foreign-language students are completely immersed in English with all subjects taught solely in English.

Supporters of immersion teaching maintain that children learn to speak, read, write, and think in English very quickly, and usually within six months they become comfortable enough with their new language that they will start using English outside of the classroom.

An Old English Grammar

By Randolph Quirk
Publisher: Routledge
Pages: 176 |Publication Date: 1958-01-01
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415045347
pdf file [scanned] (6.8 MB - zipped: 6.7 MB); no password

As the preface to this edition indicates, this Grammar is designed for the literary student of English as opposed to the student of philology. Thus, the emphasis is on practical issues of the language.

In other words, it eschews lengthy and digressive forays into the history or context of certain linguistic developments (though it does touch on certain essential matters) and focuses instead on the issues most pertinent to one who wishes to begin mastering the basics and intermediate elements of the language, such as inflexions, cases, syntactical issues.
One does not need to bring a broad basis of linguuistic training/experience to bear; but one should keep in mind that it is presented like a traditional lexicon one might encounter in Latin or Greek, i.e., no handholding through the practical elements of the language - nor is it riddled with practice sentences or parallel examples in ModE. For those, however, who want to undertake a rigorous and systematic study of the basics of OE, this is a very handy and practical Grammar reference with which to begin such an endeavor.

Alpha Teach Yourself Grammar and Style in 24 Hours

By Pamela Rice Hahn, Ph.D. Dennis E. Hensley
Publisher: Alpha
Pages: 448 Publication Date: 2000-05-19
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0028638999
922 KB rar pdf

I haven't studied grammer since grade school and this book is a good refresher. The content seems comprehensive. However, I am a little annoyed at two incidentals:
1. There are just not enough examples.
2. I have located four errors in the quizzes and I'm only a third of the way through the book. This is the most frustrating aspect. To what extent can I improve my grammer when the answers for the quizzes are incorrect? For those that own the text, look at problem 6 on page 127. The correct answer should be B and not A as the answer sheet describes.
I think I will hang onto this book and use it as a reference.

This book isn't easy. I have my masters in English, working on a PhD, and at times I was even caught up with it. Very good quizes, but too fast pace, it is impossible to learn everything with the limited resources given. But, for a professor with a PhD, maybe it's possible... But then again, he should already know it all.

Colloquial Urdu: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series)

By Tej K. Bhatia
Publisher: Routledge
Pages: 368 Publication Date: 2000-08-08
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0415135400
Format / Quality: Mp3(ripped from cassetes) + Book(PDF) zipped
Size: Book(11,7MB+11,2MB+11,4MB) / Audio 82MB

This book is really a knock-off of the author's 'Colloquial Hindi'. Of course the two languages do share a vast vocabulary and grammar in common, but what it really means here is that if you already have one of these books (the Hindi would be the better one to get) you really don't need the other.

The dialogues, grammar and exercises are all in a phonetic transcription and only the dialogues (in the back of the book) are given in the nastaliq script. The printing of this beautiful and ornately detailed script is so tiny that it is literally necessary to use a magnifying lens to read it.

Description: Colloquial Urdu is a practical course in everyday written and spoken Urdu requiring no prior knowledge of the language. This book is ideal for study independently or with a teacher. Cassettes recorded by native Urdu speakers are also available.
This paperback in the Colloquial Language Learning Series is available individually here or as part of a cassette pack. To purchase the book and the cassettes, please refer to the cassette pack listing for this language.
