Free PDF For Mathemagics: How to Look Like a Genius Without Really Trying

By Arthur Benjamin, Michael Brant Shermer
Publisher: Lowell House
Pages: 218, Date: 1993-03
ISBN-10 : 0929923545, PDF

Description:
Using proven techniques, this volume shows how to add, subtract, multiply and divide faster than is possible with a calculator or pencil and paper, and helps readers conquer their nervousness about math.

After seeing Dr. Benjamin perform in Las Vegas at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in 2002, I bought this book and also his Mathemagics course. My middle school students love it! Many of them prefer to do mental calculations when possible and they love when I do mathematic magic tricks on them.

Better, they love the algebraic explanations and can't wait to use the tricks on their friends and family, knowing that they can explain the trick as well.
My college students are amazed when I can square a 2-digit number quicker than they can punch it in on a calculator. (I'm not too fast at the 3 digit numbers; it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks!)
I highly recommend this book for math teachers, school libraries, students, or anyone at all!

Calculus for Dummies By Mark Ryan

By Mark Ryan, Publisher: For Dummies
Pages: 384, Date: 2003-05-01
ISBN-10 : 0764524984, PDF 91 mb

Description:
The mere thought of having to take a required calculus course is enough to make legions of students break out in a cold sweat. Others who have no intention of ever studying the subject have this notion that calculus is impossibly difficult unless you happen to be a direct descendant of Einstein.

Well, the good news is that you can master calculus. It's not nearly as tough as its mystique would lead you to think. Much of calculus is really just very advanced algebra, geometry, and trig.

It builds upon and is a logical extension of those subjects. If you can do algebra, geometry, and trig, you can do calculus.

Exact Exponential Algorithms (Texts in Theoretical Computer Science. An EATCS Series)

By Fedor V. Fomin, Dieter Kratsch
Publisher: Springer
Pages: 203, Date: 2010
ISBN-10 : 364216532X, PDF ~3.19 MB

Description:
Today most computer scientists believe that NP-hard problems cannot be solved by polynomial-time algorithms. From the polynomial-time perspective, all NP-complete problems are equivalent but their exponential-time properties vary widely. Why do some NP-hard problems appear to be easier than others? Are there algorithmic techniques for solving hard problems that are significantly faster than the exhaustive, brute-force methods? The algorithms that address these questions are known as exact exponential algorithms.

The history of exact exponential algorithms for NP-hard problems dates back to the 1960s. The two classical examples are Bellman, Held and Karp’s dynamic programming algorithm for the traveling salesman problem and Ryser’s inclusion–exclusion formula for the permanent of a matrix. The design and analysis of exact algorithms leads to a better understanding of hard problems and initiates interesting new combinatorial and algorithmic challenges. The last decade has witnessed a rapid development of the area, with many new algorithmic techniques discovered. This has transformed exact algorithms into a very active research field. This book provides an introduction to the area and explains the most common algorithmic techniques, and the text is supported throughout with exercises and detailed notes for further reading.

The book is intended for advanced students and researchers in computer science, operations research, optimization and combinatorics.

PDF For Guide to Three Dimensional Structure and Motion Factorization

By Guanghui Wang, Q.M. Jonathan Wu
Publisher: SpringerPages: 212, Date: 2010-09-17
ISBN-10 : 0857290452, PDF 8 mb

Description:
The problem of structure and motion recovery from image sequences is an important theme in computer vision. Considerable progress has been made in this field during the past two decades, resulting in successful applications in robot navigation, augmented reality, industrial inspection, medical image analysis, and digital entertainment, among other areas.

However, many of these methods work only for rigid objects and static scenes.
The study of non-rigid structure from motion is not only of academic significance, but also has important practical applications in real-world, nonrigid or dynamic scenarios, such as human facial expressions and moving vehicles.

This practical guide/reference provides a comprehensive overview of Euclidean structure and motion recovery, with a specific focus on factorization-based algorithms. The book discusses the latest research in this field, including the extension of the factorization algorithm to recover the structure of non-rigid objects, and presents some new algorithms developed by the authors. Readers require no significant knowledge of computer vision, although some background on projective geometry and matrix computation would be beneficial.

Topics and features: presents the first systematic study of structure and motion recovery of both rigid and non-rigid objects from images sequences; discusses in depth the theory, techniques, and applications of rigid and non-rigid factorization methods in three dimensional computer vision; examines numerous factorization algorithms, covering affine, perspective and quasi-perspective projection models; provides appendices describing the mathematical principles behind projective geometry, matrix decomposition, least squares, and nonlinear estimation techniques; includes chapter-ending review questions, and a glossary of terms used in the book.

This unique text offers practical guidance in real applications and implementations of 3D modeling systems for practitioners in computer vision and pattern recognition, as well as serving as an invaluable source of new algorithms and methodologies for structure and motion recovery for graduate students and researchers.
