This text provides an up-to-date introduction to the morphological analysis of words. Morphology deals with the internal structure of words and how this structure affects their phonological, syntactic and semantic properties. This book covers both inflection (the different forms of a word), and word formation, the ways in which new words can be added to the vocabulary of a language.

The enormous variety of morphological operations that we find in natural languages is quite intriguing. The first part of the book gives a cross-linguistic survey of these operations: affixation, compounding, reduplication, and several kinds of phonological operation.

The specific properties of word formation and inflection are dealt with in subsequent chapters. The second part of the book focuses on the ways in which the morphological structure of words determines their phonological, syntactic, and semantic properties. These different 'interfaces' are dealt with systematically, again with illustrations from a number of languages. In the last part of the book the reader is introduced to present-day research on the acquisition of morphological knowledge, and on the way in which complex words are processed. This will give insight as to how lexical knowledge is structured and how it is stored in memory.

Coarse geometry is the study of spaces (particularly metric spaces) from a "large scale" point of view, so that two spaces that look the same from a great distance are actually equivalent. This point of view is effective because it is often true that the relevant geometric properties of metric spaces are determined by their coarse geometry. Two examples of important uses of coarse geometry are Gromov's beautiful notion of a hyperbolic group and Mostow's proof of his famous rigidity theorem.

The first few chapters of the book provide a general perspective on coarse structures. Even when only metric coarse structures are in view, the abstract framework brings the same simplification as does the passage from epsilons and deltas to open sets when speaking of continuity. The middle section of the book reviews notions of negative curvature and rigidity. Modern interest in large scale geometry derives in large part from Mostow's rigidity theorem and from Gromov's subsequent "large scale" rendition of the crucial properties of negatively curved spaces.

The final chapters discuss recent results on asymptotic dimension and uniform embeddings into Hilbert space.

John Roe is known for his work on index theory, coarse geometry, and topology. His exposition is clear and direct, bringing insight to this modern field of mathematics. Students and researchers who wish to learn about contemporary methods of understanding the geometry and topology of manifolds will be well served by reading this book.

Differential geometry, in the classical sense, is developed through the theory of smooth manifolds. Modern differential geometry from the author’s perspective is used in this work to describe physical theories of a geometric character without using any notion of calculus (smoothness).

Instead, an axiomatic treatment of differential geometry is presented via sheaf theory (geometry) and sheaf cohomology (analysis). Using vector sheaves, in place of bundles, based on arbitrary topological spaces, this unique approach in general furthers new perspectives and calculations that generate unexpected potential applications.
Modern Differential Geometry in Gauge Theories is a two-volume research monograph that systematically applies a sheaf-theoretic approach to such physical theories as gauge theory. Volume 1 focused on Maxwell fields. Continuing in Volume II, the author extends the application of his sheaf-theoretic approach to Yang–Mills fields in general. The important topics include: cohomological classification of Yang–Mills fields, the geometry of Yang–Mills A-connections and moduli space of a vector sheaf, as well as Einstein's equation in vacuum.

The text contains a wealth of detailed and rigorous computations and will appeal to mathematicians and physicists, along with advanced undergraduate and graduate students, interested in applications of differential geometry to physical theories such as general relativity, elementary particle physics and quantum gravity.

Summary: The best grammar book for intermediate level students

Of all the English grammar books I know, this is the BEST one for INTERMEDIATE level students (that is, for those who know some English but need a systematic review of the grammar).

Eastwood and Mackin's book is PRACTICAL: it contains most of the things necessary in everyday speech or simple writing, but not more. The structuring of the chapters is great: on the left you find SENTENCES illustrating the key point, on the right they are EXPLAINED IN A SIMPLE WAY.

I recommend that you GET THE EXERCISE BOOK too (A Basic English Grammar Exercises by J. Eastwood) and use them together: do the exercises, check your answers and if you made many mistakes, review the corresponding chapter from the grammar book. I used this method for self-study and I found it very efficient.

Although Basic English Grammar does teach you the vast majority of the practical grammar, you may also want to get "Practical English Usage" by Michael Swan to check some of the more advanced points that you come across now and then. These three books are all you'll ever need on English grammar, unless you want to be professional in English (like a translator, university professor, etc.).

Warning: contrary to what the publisher says, Basic English Grammar is NOT FOR BEGINNERS! Since all the explanations are in English, those who cannot read English relatively fluently, may find studying from this book frustrating. I believe beginners should learn from books that explain the basics of grammar in their native language.

The authors cover two main methods for proving the $h$-principle: holonomic approximation and convex integration. The reader will find that, with a few notable exceptions, most instances of the $h$-principle can be treated by the methods considered here. A special emphasis in the book is made on applications to symplectic and contact geometry.

Gromov's famous book "Partial Differential Relations", which is devoted to the same subject, is an encyclopedia of the $h$-principle, written for experts, while the present book is the first broadly accessible exposition of the theory and its applications. The book would be an excellent text for a graduate course on geometric methods for solving partial differential equations and inequalities. Geometers, topologists and analysts will also find much value in this very readable exposition of an important and remarkable topic.

Computational semantics is the art and science of computing meaning in natural language. The meaning of a sentence is derived from the meanings of the individual words in it, and this process can be made so precise that it can be implemented on a computer.

Designed for students of linguistics, computer science, logic and philosophy, this comprehensive text shows how to compute meaning using the functional programming language Haskell.

It deals with both denotational meaning (where meaning comes from knowing the conditions of truth in situations), and operational meaning (where meaning is an instruction for performing cognitive action).

Including a discussion of recent developments in logic, it will be invaluable to linguistics students wanting to apply logic to their studies, logic students wishing to learn how their subject can be applied to linguistics, and functional programmers interested in natural language processing as a new application area.

The book starts without any presuppositions. Nothing is assumed beyond common sense: no programming skills, no knowledge of syntax,no knowledge of semantics, no knowledge of natural language processing of any sort. The book begins by introducing the basics of Haskell, the programming language that is used throughout.

Haskell is a member of the family of functional programming languages and suitable for the theoretical purposes of this book because of its exceptional transparency. The use of Haskell in an introduction to computational semantics is a departure from the widespread use of Prolog in introductions to symbolic natural language processing.

The authors motivate this choice by pointing out that much of symbolic computational linguistics consists, like so many other types of computational problems, in defining the right data structures and the right functions that map one data structure (the one that presents the problem) into another (the one that presents its solution). Indeed, the first applications that are shown in the book are non-linguistic, and chosen solely for the purpose of giving the reader a good grasp of how Haskell works and what can be done with it. From these first applications there is a gradual progress, via applications that involve elementary forms of language processing (such as word counts in texts), to applications that belong to computational semantics proper. One important benefit of this way of easing into the subject is that it makes the reader aware of how much language processing has in common with problem solving and data processing tasks that do not involve language...

Although the book starts from scratch, and presupposes nothing beyond common sense, it nevertheless manages to penetrate into some of the more advanced areas of computational semantics: the final chapters present continuation semantics, discourse representation theory, and a system of dynamic epistemic logic that serves as a first step in the direction of a full-fledged computational theory of verbal communication.

And yet, this wide span notwithstanding, the book complies with current demands on texts in computational linguistics in that it presents for every bit of theory that it introduces a Haskell implementation, which the reader can run herself and play with, if she downloads the relevant, freely available supporting software. The same goes for the numerous implementation-related exercises.

This means that the diligent student of this book will, by the time she gets to the end of it, have not only learned a good deal about syntax and semantics, but have also acquired much of that which distinguishes the computational from the theoretical linguist.
